The Tenant House at Jerusalem Mill Village!
This building is not open to the public.
At the intersection of Jericho and Jerusalem Roads, across from the General Store, this buiding is believed to be the residence of one of the tenant farmers of Ralph Sackett Lee (son of the original David Lee). It consists of two sections: the west end is 2-stories of rubble stone construction 18 x 24 ft and the east end is 1-story of wood frame on a stone foundation 18 x 22 ft. Above both parts is the attic with dormers. The stone portion has an interior chimney with a large cooking fireplace in the west wall on the ground floor, with smaller fireplaces on
each of the two floors above. This part may be the "dwelling of stone 2-story 20x27 ft" listed in the 1814 tax assessment.
The wood part with its stone foundation appear to have been built first. The stone portion only includes three stone walls, with none between it and the wood part and there is the edge of wood siding visible between the stone and wood parts. There are no stairs in the wood portion, with a very awkward passage between the two parts.
It is possible that the apparent older portion (with the wood frame), or at least its foundation, is one of the 20 ft dwellings "in sorry condition" mentioned in a 1743 survey of Jerusalem.
Restoration of this building is planned for the future through the efforts of the Friends of Jerusalem Mill and plans are being made for its use. The photo above is from the early 1940's.
