The Blacksmith Shop at Jerusalem Mill Village!

Please click the "Read More" links on the right to learn more about Jerusalem Mill Village.

This building, across the road from the Mill, is shown on the 1860 Jerusalem Mill plat, as well as on the 1877 map, as the "B. Shop". It is unknown how long before that it was built.

While it is now 33' wide and and 36' deep, examination of the stone work on both sides reveals that it was once half that depth. The size on the 1860 plat seems to represent the smaller size, so it is assumed that it was expanded after 1860. There is, of course, a long history of blacksmith shops in Jerusalem, as its services were essential to the operation of the mill as well as everyday life. A deed from 1806 indicates that David Lee's blacksmith shop at that time was located to the east of the Village on the south side of Jerusalem Road.

When the last operator of the mill died in 1961, he had been using this building as his residence.

The blacksmith served the community by making many everyday items and fixing parts used in the mill machinery. This restored structure once again serves as a blacksmith shop. On Sundays, our blacksmiths show visitors how these everyday, useful items were made.
